About Me

I have always had a love of stories and a fascination with character. At university I studied Latin and Ancient Greek, where I had the opportunity to explore all of the ancient myths and legends in their original text. After this, I decided I wanted to work in publishing, alongside wonderful storytellers.

I had my first placements at Penguin and Hodder, in both the editorial and publicity departments.  This then led me to a long-term job at the Eve White Literary Agency, where I had the chance to work with writers at the early stages of their career, both children’s fiction and adult fiction/non-fiction. One of my roles there was overseeing the submissions inboxes and helping to find new literary talent. In this role I learned what publishers are looking for and how to spot and develop potential.

Once I left the agency I went freelance as an editor, helping unpublished writers to reach their potential. I worked with clients directly and also with agencies, such as The Literary Consultancy and the Daniel Goldsmith Agency. Alongside this, I was also a script reader for a handful of major film/TV production companies, such as Working Title Films and Left Bank Pictures, which produced titles like The Crown and The Theory of Everything. I scouted for other production companies too, helping them find novels that could be adapted for film and TV. This has given me a sharp sense of what kind of themes production companies look for in novels they hope to adapt to TV/film. Aside from editing novels I have worked as a script editor for a small number of screenwriters and playwrights, such as Paul Unwin, co-creator of Casualty and Holby City.

As an editor, I enjoy working with writers at all stages of their career. I love to look under the hood of a story and see what potential can be tapped further. This could involve helping writers with things such as pace, structure and character and voice. However, this is just a part of the process. Understanding how to define your story and market it to literary agents is very important and something I give real focus to. If I feel your novel has potential I am happy to forward it to my contacts with my recommendation.

Given that I am not part of a big editing agency, I am able to offer affordable prices and I can dedicate real time to my writers. I like to think of my approach as encouraging and non-directive, being a creative support and developing the writer’s ideas rather than someone who just offers opinions. It’s important to me to have a real dialogue with the writers I work with and I see this relationship as one that is long-lasting. Questions, advice and support are welcome at any point down the line.

My door is always open.
